Creating a Basic
Scrapbook Page Using PSP 8
Created by Bannerwoman - Jan 2005
-
Choose the image(s) you want to scrap. In this
layout I will use 1 image of at least 12” in height. You can incorporate
more if you’d like. (Note: If you are creating pages at 8” x 10” then
the image height only need be 10”.)
This is the desired result:

-
Open a new image 12” x 12” at 150dpi or better.
(8” x 10” if that is what you chose to make.) On this blank canvas
you want to create a background that will go well with the image you chose
to scrap. So it might be a good idea to take your colors right from that
image. I took two colors from mine, a lighter/brighter color and a darker
color. This is where scrapping becomes your preference.
There is more then one way to
do this.
a) You can create your
background on the 12” x 12” page, which will likely be a tad slower due to
the large size, or you can make a tile.
b) In my example I opened a
new image 4” x 4” and flood filled with the brighter/lighter color I choose
in step 2, and used the air brush tool
with these
settings,

and made a light spray across
the tile.
I then applied the Fantastic Machines Paint Engine filter.
Then applied: Effects/Reflection Effects/Kaleidoscope setting that I liked.
You can play with the dice and see what you get.
Then I applied FM Tile Tools/Blend Emboss to give the tile a bit more
texture.
I used PSP 8’s seamless tile to assure the ‘paper’ would fill in
seamlessly.
***(Tip: I also save most of my pieces so if I ever had to start over, or
just didn’t like the end result; you still have the work you have done.)***
-
To flood fill your larger ‘paper’ (the 12” x 12”
image we opened in step 2) choose this image from your patterns button
in the color palette. (Highlighted in RED)

You will see the drop down box with your images currently open in PSP.

-
Look for the tile you have made, and select it.
Then using the flood fill tool, fill in your ‘paper’ with your tile.
You should now have your ‘main’ background for you scrap page.
(shown smaller then actual, click to see full size)
-
Next go to your photo you have chosen to scrap, you
want to cut it down so that just the main part of the image is left, but
not cropping any height. You want to end up with a tall skinny kind of
picture. Then click the copy button,
(edit/copy or
ctrl+c) and go back to your ‘paper’ we just
finished, right click and paste as new layer. I added a drop shadow, so
it’s up to you, some like the ‘flat’ look.
-
Now in my image I have set the image off to the
left, so I am going to be explaining everything else as though you have
placed your image there as well. If you decide to place it to the right,
then where I say left, you need to say right. If you have centered your
image on the page, then you will need to adjust the size of your border
were about to make in the next step.
-
Now open another new image.
This one should be 12”
(or your height) by 2”. Flood fill this image with the lighter/brighter
color again and apply a pattern. I used
bw_stripe. To use this pattern,
download and save the file to your PSP 8 patterns folder. To Chose the
pattern select the patterns button located in the color palette, as in
step 3, and then
click the color block. Scroll through the drop down list till you find the
one you like.
-
Now that you have your ‘side bar’, copy
that image
and go back to your main layout (LO) and paste as a new layer again. Set
this side bar over to the right hand side so it overlaps the photo a tad,
but doesn’t leave any edge showing. Then add a drop shadow. (Effects/3D
Effects/Drop Shadow). I used H: 6, V: 6, Opacity: 80, and Blur: 12.
That’s basically it. Now you
need to add text, some embellishments, etc. Most of scrapbooking is totally
up to your imagination, but just in case you would like to know, here is
what I did to finish my page off.
EMBELLISHMENTS:
1. Corner Flower:
I used the preset shapes button
to add the flower in the corner. I created
it as vector (this way you can resize the shape if you want to before
making any changes to its appearance), with these settings.

Remember, if you want your light color on the inside of the flower and the
darker color to be the outline, the light color will be on top in your color
palette and the darker color on the bottom. Now go to Layers, and choose
convert to raster layer.
With the magic wand I
selected the outline of the flower. Then I applied Effects/3D Effects/Inner
Bevel to it, and used my
bw_metal (download and save to your psp8 presets
folder) preset in the drop down list.
I then selected the middle
parts of the flower, and used the airbrush to add some of the dark color to
it. Then I applied Effects/Artistic Effects/Brush Strokes with these
settings.

-
Text:
To apply the text for
SUNFLOWERS, I used the same bevel as in the flower. I created the text
as vector. Then I right clicked on that layer in the layers pallet,
and converted text to character shapes to change the color of the S.
That is how I got the S to be a different color then the rest of the word.
You can do this as two separate text entries if that would be easier.
The quote text just has a
drop shadow added to it.
-
Bee & Line:
The bee is a tube I made for
psp 7 I believe. You can download it
here if you like. Anything that would
coordinate with you LO would work here.
The line was made using this
setting with the pen.

I just drew a freehand
curved line. You will get a line with all the nodes on it…. that’s
normal. You can just choose another tool and they will go away, it
doesn’t matter what color you use for this, as long as you can see it, and
that only a foreground color is selected. Then I applied a cutout to the
line. It will tell
you the layer must be converted to raster layer, just say yes.
That about sums it up…..If
you have any questions, please feel free to holler! E-mail is in the links
on the left.
Happy Scraping!
