Creating A Quick Brush

This is a quick tutorial on how I create my brushes, and some of the effects I get using them.  I know there is most likely a 'neater' way of doing this, but this is the quickest way I have found.   I create these for repetitive use of and image, ie) creating backgrounds, etc.

Materials Needed
:

  • PSP 8
  • A Black & White image

You can get a free 30 day trial of Jasc here, and I have posted a few sample images here.

You can also use this image if you like. Right click and save to disk.

1.  Click on the paint brush tool.

2.  Click on the pre-shaped brushes. In this tool you will notice that there are several options.  You want to create a new brush. This appears inside the little window we just opened to the right hand side.

3.  You will then see this screen....

Fill in the name with what you want to call the brush.  I used "bwrose".  Then you can add the author and copyright if you wish.  Click OK.

Well, it's pretty much that easy.  To use the brush, go back to your brush tools, and click on the pre-shaped tool.  You should now see your rose your created in the list.  You choose a color, gradient or texture for your brush and use at what ever desired settings you want.  You may need to play with the settings to get it exactly how you want it to be.

Here are some of my results from this tube.

This one I added the brush at 150 in size twice, with the brush set to a gradient. Added a drop shadow, a new layer with a background color, and framed it. This one I applied using any color, it wouldn't really matter. Applied a cut out of 1,1,80,1. Added the background on a new layer, and framed it.

I hope this tutorial was of some use!  If you find any mistakes or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  I'd love to hear any thoughts or ways I could improve on this tutorial.  Any resemblance of another tutorial is purely coincidence.
