Bannerwoman's Fabric Tutorial

Materials Needed:

  • PSP 7, 8 or 9 (You can get a 30 day free trial here.)

This tutorial will help you create fabric swatches for use in scrap booking.  I hope it is understandable, and that you find it useful.

Lets Get Started:

1.  Open new image 8.5x2 inches, 200dpi (or 150 if your machine is a bit slower.) Create this strip 12x2 inches if you doing the larger scrap pages.

2.  Choose the selection tool  , and create a custom selection.  Should appear as this icon in the tools bar, depending on how you have your psp set up this might be in a different location then in mine.

3.  Create the selection to be: Left:0, Right: 1700, Top: 100, Bottom: 300.  This will be different if you choose a different resolution or different width.  Basically, you want your selection to be 100 from the top, that will not change no matter what resolution you choose, same with left (it will be whatever the width of your new image is).  For the bottom, take 100px of the height. Your selection should look something like this.

(image resize for show)

4.  Flood fill with a light gray, I used #C0C0C0.  This way you can save it as a psp file later, and colorize it to the color you wish to use.  Select none.

5.  Go to effects/geometric effects/wave.  Settings as follows:

6. Repeat wave again, same settings.

7. Layers/New raster layer.

8. Create the same selection you made in step 3.

9.  Flood fill with a shade darker grey, I used #ACACAC.  Select none.

10.  Apply the same geometric wave as step 5.

11.  Create the same selection as in step 3 again.  Last time I promise.

12.  Flood fill this selection with yet another shade of grey. I used #A7A7A7.

13.  Go to effects/texture effects/texture.  I applied the following texture.

14. Layers/Merge Visible.

15.  Save this file now as a psp file.  You can open it anytime you want to use it, colorize it and add a drop shadow or whatever you wish.

Here are some examples.

1.  As per the tutorial:

2.  Colorized with drop shadow:

3. Ragged edges, just used eraser tool and shaved off a few of the jaggy ridges.

4. Double edged fabric, created using the same ideas used in this tutorial.  I used 5 layers to create this one.  First layer, make selection, light gray, deselect, wave 10,1 vertical.  New layer, make selection, flood fill light gray, deselect, wave horizontal 5,3.  New layer, make selection, medium gray, deselect, wave vertical 10,1.  New layer, make selection, medium gray, deselect, wave  horizontal 5,3.  New layer, make selection, flood fill darker gray, apply texture, and save.

** Remember, you can always make this same swatch darker or lighter by adjusting the brightness/contrast.  Thanks for trying my tutorial!

That's about it.  I hope this tutorial at least gave you a few ideas, or maybe some new things you hadn't used before.  Happy Scrapping!  If you find any mistakes or have any questions, please feel free to contact me.  I'd love to hear any thoughts or ways I could improve on this tutorial.  Any resemblance of another tutorial is purely coincidence.
