Joanne's Tube Tutorial for PSP 9

Also, some suggestions have been made to improve this tutorial, including:

  • setting the lasso tool to precise cursor so it's easier to see.
  • adding a layer at the bottom, flood filled with a darkish contrasting color to see the edges better
  • finding the stray pixels through use of magic wand
  • and finally to crop the image to see if there really are no strays left

Select your freehand selection tool...... depending on which one you have selected already - it may look like the magic wand. Click the little arrow beside to choose Freehand Selection from the 3 choices available.....
Set the selection type to Point to point - feather of 1 or 2.........
Now cut around the part you want to tube....... precision doesn't matter here - it's just to get rid of some of the background. Once the marching ants appear , Edit Copy, Edit - paste as new image. So that you have the image with a transparent background.
This is where I like to increase the canvas size a little bit...... so that you can start removing the outside parts a little easier..... go to Image - Canvas size......
The original dimensions will show on top of the box that pops up.  Just add 50px or so..... this is just to get the canvas size a little bigger so it's easier to work with. Click the center in the placement so that the image will be centered ...... and add 50px or so to the height and width....
It's a good idea at this point to save your image somewhere as a .pspimage......... and save once in a while as you go along. File - save as....... and save as .pspimage. That way, if your psp crashes, or if you want to stop and start again later..... it's saved and you don't have to start all over again. Every once in a while, as you're working on it..... go up to File - Save....... this saves the latest work you have done. Choose your zoom tool and zoom in on part of the image....... this makes it a lot easier to see what you're doing.
Now you can start "cutting away" the outsides. I like to do it in chunks rather than all at once. Then there's more room for error. If you make a mistake, hit the delete key, and it takes you back one step.  Start somewhere on the outside, and click inwards..... and back again to where you started - right click to get the sections to "join" and marching ants appear .  Now hit your delete key to delete the portion that you have selected. I'm cutting around and antennae here......
Once you're done cutting away around the entire image...... go to Edit copy - edit - paste as new image. This takes away all the "extra" that you've added to the canvas size. You can save it as a .pspimage, or you can export as a picture tube....... File - export - picture tube. Name it, and it wil be saved in your tubes folder for use as a picture tube.
If you like, you can add a drop shadow...... the settings depend on what you want it to look like...........
You can play with the settings - vertical, horizontal, blur and opacity to see what you prefer....... shows in the preview window.
And here he is flattened and saved as a .jpg.
